March is Women’s History Month! This month commemorates and honors the vital role of women in America’s history. Women have a huge impact on everyone’s lives from the help they provide as mothers to those who are involved in media. Asian American women have had significant roles throughout history as authors, leaders, activists, athletes, and more.
Maya Lin is an Asian American artist and architect who is known for her large-scale environmental artworks. She studied architecture at Yale University in Connecticut where she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees. A defining moment in her career was when she won the design competition for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to be built in Washington, D.C. Her work has had a significant impact as it continues to honor those who served and countless Americans continue to visit the memorial each year. Since then she has focused most of her work on pieces that recognize historical events and issues.
Maya Lin’s work has recognized many other significant moments in American history including memorials commemorating the Civil Rights Movement and the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Her designs are minimal and effective with an emphasis on sustainability. Her work has been displayed in various places across the country including the National Gallery of Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Smithsonian Institution.
