Trying out New Things

Being in college can be exciting but it can also be very intimated and scary to have to face all these new challenges and navigate this new life on your own. I’ve seen friends create a strict comfort zone as soon as possible to ensure that they don’t have to be in an uncomfortable position, and I wanted to use this blog post to tell you not to do so. When I first got here, I tried to establish a routine and when I got in a rut, I didn’t want to leave it. But I forced myself to try new things and it can be a great avenue to meet new people, discover new interests or passions; And if you end up hating it, now you know what you dislike in the future. Here are some of the things that I’ve tried since I entered college and I’ll be completely honest about whether I liked the activity or hated it.

BJJ/ MMA

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, I picked up towards the end of my first semester and I absolutely loved it. Unfortunately, because of Covid-19, I was unable to stay at that gym for very long but I recently went back and I could see myself enjoying it for the rest of my college career, and maybe beyond.

Tennis

Tried Tennis with some friends, and while it was enjoyable, I don’t think it’s as fun as other sports I’ve done in the past, such as soccer, or basketball. It can become a very boring game of rallying back and forth and I’m not good enough to make it fast paced enough for me to enjoy the game. While I might like it once I improve, I don’t see myself putting in the time to play tennis over other sports.

Climbing

Took a class my freshman year, and it was actually a lot of fun to do. My muscles were completely sore afterwards, and I was completely drained for the next 2 days, but it was very very enjoyable. If the classes were cheaper, I think I might go on a more consistent basis. So once I get my co-op check, then I’d definitely be a regular.

Cooking

After eating the repetitive dining food at the three halls, I imagined cooking to be very fun. Honestly, it can be, but it’s also very time consuming in terms of buying groceries, watching youtube videos, recipes, even before the actual cooking begins. It is fun to cook a really healthy and tasty meal, but during the school year, with midterms, homework, clubs, extracurriculars, meeting friends, etc, it can be hard to find a time to cook consistently.
