Tips for Co-op Search

Going through the co-op search process for the first time this semester has been a learning experience to say the least. There is a lot I wish I knew from the start that would’ve made the search more efficient and less stressful. This will help anyone who hasn’t yet applied for co-ops and plans to in the future or could serve as another reminder to anyone else!

Apply Early

  • Because I was following the steps of the co-op search process according to the timeline given by co-op class/advisor, I didn’t realize how late I had been in applying in comparison to my peers. Not that this is a bad thing, but there is an advantage in getting a head start in applying to companies. You may be able to hear back earlier and land a co-op earlier which will prevent all the stress that most experience when it gets close to the end of the semester and finals season and finding a co-op is still a priority. I would say, start checking the NUworks site as soon as the semester starts and keep monitoring it to see if co-ops you’re interested in start getting posted.

Send Thank You Emails

  • Although this was something my co-op advisor stressed, I definitely could’ve done better in sending thank you emails to all my interviewers. There is always a possibility that this could contribute to the decision of a company choosing a student over another for the role. These interviewers are also giving you an opportunity, so you should be grateful and acknowledge that!

Don’t Have Your Notes Out During Interviews

  • As much as this is tempting with all these interviews operating virtually, think of this interview as an opportunity to improve your public speaking skills. It’s also good to see an interview as a professional and yet casual conversation where you are just speaking with another human being that you can connect with.

Refer to the Interviewer by their Name as Often as Possible

  • Truthfully, this is just a general communication skill that has been a professional goal of mine for a while even though it sounds silly! Whenever my interviews ended, I always tried to say “it was really great meeting you” followed by their name. Although it doesn’t have a significant impact on its own, minor changes like these can build up and impress your interviewer.
