The One

The One: John Marrs

– Blog Post Due 9/15

As some of you might know (not that anyone reads these posts), I am an avid book lover. For the past few years, I have been unable to stop reading thrillers.

Background

“The One” by John Marrs is a psychological thriller based in a world where a scientist has developed a dating app that matches people based on their DNA compatibility. The app has led to countless successful marriages and happy families but at the cost of destroying many others.

The story follows several couples with distinct problems and secrets. One couple includes the App developer, a young, lonely scientist with an apathetic attitude toward love and a seemingly perfect man that is everything she ever could have wanted. Another couple consists of a serial killer and an intelligent detective looking into his crimes. Marrs does an excellent job of injecting romance, fear, and chills into a psychological thriller filled with twists.

What I Loved:

Every character is well-developed, and I found myself rooting for even the most unforgivable characters. I find the depth of characters equally important to the plot, so the multiple narratives made the story very attractive. Marrs shows us how love can change people for the better but also drive them to commit horrendous crimes.

If you are looking for a fast-paced, thrilling novel that will have your heart racing at 2 AM, I highly recommend this book! Now that I have finished “The One,” I plan to check out his other works, such as “What Lies Between Us,” “The Passengers,” “The Marriage Act,” and “When You Disappeared.” I am excited to update you on how I feel about his other books! Bye for now, and good luck with your second week of classes 🙂
