Do you have those songs that come on and it immediately takes you back to a certain point in time?

I do. Some songs make me think of a specific summer, going through a specific point in my life, memories from a certain time.

I think oftentimes it’s a double-edged sword because it brings back the past, both the good and the bad. There’s different feelings I associate with different songs. It ranges from feelings of warmth and peace to sadness and regret, about people, about places, about experiences.

However, even with the sadder memories certain songs may bring up, I’m reminded that it’s only a matter of time before whatever makes me sad heals itself. And like with anything else in life, it’s about listening to it still and feeling at peace eventually rather than blocking it out.

Music is absolutely essential to me. I listen while I’m doing homework. Running on the treadmill. Taking a walk outside to get somewhere. Something with lyrics, the familiar melody of an old song, or even the beginning of a song I know will go in my favorites list, it just is an irreplaceable aspect of my life that’s always there. It’s motivation, acceptance, nostalgia, and so much more, all in one. And so I learn to embrace it as it brings back the memories too because it’s all a part of me and what I’ve been through.
