Jimin Co-op Experience

While working part-time at a pharmacy that I had co-op in, seeing my manager always reminds me of what kind of a pharmacist or manager I want to become. In every pharmacy and healthcare settings, a good leader is required for the success of an organization. While students are on their co-ops, it is important that there is a manager to supervise and lead them. Pharmacy supervisor served as the manager of the students and the lead technicians of the pharmacy served as the leader of the students. The manager helped to onboard students and to demonstrate how the pharmacy runs day to day. The lead technicians showed students the daily tasks in detail. They were supportive and approachable for questions and concerns. Because both managers and leaders were there for students from the beginning to the end of the co-op cycle, students are able to develop; students are able to see in person what leaders and manager do. Good leaders and managers need to set standard for students who will learn from them.

During this co-op of fall 2020, I believe that I developed the most as a future pharmacist because I had a good manager. Because my manager for this co-op is the supervisor of the pharmacy, I was able to shadow her role as a pharmacy supervisor. Some of her characteristics that I appreciated during my co-op were effectiveness and communication skills. Although she had lots of tasks to finish everyday as a supervisor, such as reviewing audits and running reports, she did not hesitate to work on the bench with other pharmacists and technicians when they seemed overwhelmed. Because the pharmacy I work in is very fast paced, it is common that pharmacists are piled with prescriptions to verify, and technicians are overloaded with prescriptions to fill. However, my manager took initiative to assign tasks and encourage everyone.
