Food For Thought

Have you heard the saying: “life imitates art”? I find it quite interesting because the art is never specified, which gives you the freedom to interpret it however you’d like. I choose to interpret it as the art of cooking. How artful is cooking? Allow Marshall Erikson to demonstrate through one of my favorite lines in the sitcom, How I Met Your Mother:

Marshall Erikson: “Just a Burger? Just a burger. Robin, it’s so much more than “just a burger.” I mean… that first bite-oh, what heaven that first bite is. The bun, like a sesame freckled breast of an angel, resting gently on the ketchup and mustard below, flavors mingling in a seductive pas de deux. And then… a pickle! The most playful little pickle! Then a slice of tomato, a leaf of lettuce and a… a patty of ground beef so exquisite, swirling in your mouth, breaking apart, and combining again in a fugue of sweets and savor so delightful. This is no mere sandwich of grilled meat and toasted bread, Robin. This is God, speaking to us in food.”

Since the first time I watched that scene, the beautiful lyricism of Marshall’s love of burgers has stuck with me for many years. Going back to the saying, I feel like my recent cooking experiences have led me to form an appreciation for the intricacies and thought that goes into the flavor and presentation of meals. Especially this year, making almost all of my meals has made me feel inspired by my mother’s delectable home cooked meals and the dedication of all the chefs in my favorite restaurants. I think having the notion that specific steps and passion can lead to a Michelin Star worthy masterpiece can be a good lens to view life and one’s goals with.

Just some food for thought… wink wink 🙂
