Chinese New Year Far From Home

As the Chinese New Year passes by, it will be my first I celebrate in another state. In my family, we like to make food all day and eat it through the new year. My siblings and I work together to clean the house to welcome the new year and figuratively getting rid of the year’s bad luck. My parents cook dumplings, fish, vegetables, and many more dishes. My favorite dish is tangyuan, a glutinous rice ball with fillings like peanut butter, black sesame, or red bean. Overall, Chinese New Year is my favorite holiday as my family does not celebrate any other holiday like Christmas.

With the fact that I am in college, classes do not wait. I have two tests on Chinese New Year, making it hard to celebrate the holiday. However, I am fortunate to have the luxury to facetime my family and feel like I am there. My current plans include cleaning up my dorm as a way to take part in the celebration. Moreover, having a clean dorm can reduce stress caused by the back-to-back tests. The highlight will be trying out dumplings and spring rolls from Dumpling Cafe in Chinatown and noodles from Dakzen. Here’s to a new year!
