Avoid Driving in Boston

As I write this piece I am actually driving in Boston (obviously as a passenger because don’t text and drive). I have counted 16 potholes and 18 unnecessary honks from impatient drivers so far. This is normal. I also am reporting to you live that I just watched someone run a red light. This is also normal.

I live in Greater Boston so I spend a sufficient amount of time driving through all parts of Boston. I can give you 3 small pieces of advice if you somehow plan to ever make a trip here.

  1. Make **very** educated guesses about other drivers and their next move.

If you see them signal right, assume they will either not merge at all or actually mean to go left. If someone is moving at a steady pace, never get too close because they will probably swerve into the exit lane just barely making it.

  1. Read all 5 parking signs before you turn off your car.

They always say things like “Parking only from 4 pm-6 pm Monday-Tuesday unless it is a holiday but if it is a holiday it is Friday-Sunday 7 am-2 pm but all is excluded on the 2nd Monday of every month…blah blah blah.” Do not take chances. That $150 parking ticket is never worth it.

  1. Watch out for pedestrians!!!

I get it…pedestrians can suck sometimes. As a member of both sides of the story, I can just say that patience goes a long way, so drive slowly and always stop for that college student who is late for class. Otherwise, you probably WILL hit them since an unspoken rule of being a Boston pedestrian is to never look and hope for the best.
