A Brief History on Grace Lee Boggs

Grace Lee Boggs, a Chinese American born in Rhode Island, is known as an American author, social activist, philosopher, and feminist. Most notably, her time in Detroit working towards allyship between Asian and Black Americans has allowed her to work closely with the community and better advocate for causes like the Black Power Movement. She worked tirelessly advocating and organizing civil rights movements, participating in all major movements during her lifetime.

Grace Lee Boggs’ introduction to activism grew after finding barriers in the academic world due to various factors like race and gender regardless of talent and achievements earned. Through hardship, she was able to see past the statistical ideas and reveal the human side of the issue people are suffering and protesting against. Thus, armed with knowledge and fervor to improve basic equal rights she had challenged the world to be better and greatly impacted both the AAPI and Black communities. She leaves behind many written works on her activism, the Boggs Center which acts as a hub for grassroots organizing and social activism, and much change for future generations.
