Where The Crawdads Sing Review
Blog Post for the week of 7/25-7/29
Background
In today’s post, I will review the award-winning, coming of age mystery thriller: “Where the Crawdads Sing.” I tried reading this book last year but could not get into it because period novels bore me. However, after seeing so many generous ratings about it, I decided to try it again. The news that the live-action version had come to theaters also motived me. Reece Witherspoon is one of my directors, so I have high hopes for the film. Furthermore, I am a huge fan of Harris Dickson, so I’m curious how he’ll portray Chase Andrews (the story’s main antagonist).
Controversy
Another point worth noting is the controversy surrounding the story and the Author. Delia Owens, the Author, has been banned from several African countries because she refused to stand trial in a murder case that occurred years ago. There is speculation that she and her husband were somehow involved. The issue has just increased curiosity about the book and the movie. I will remember to keep this in mind when I analyze the new film.
Review
“Where the Crawdads Sing” is about a young girl surviving in the marsh after her family abandons her. Alienated by the townspeople, she turns to nature and animals for comfort. The story takes a huge turn when she is charged with the murder of her past love interest. The story reminded me of “To Kill a Mockingbird” because it incorporates social issues such as racism, mystery, and the love of family. I was slightly underwhelmed because I was expecting more of a thriller. However, Owens creates complex characters that most people can connect to, despite their unrelatable backstories. I would recommend this to people who love melancholy coming-of-age stories.
Movie Plan with the Family
Lastly, my family is visiting me in Boston this weekend, and I cannot wait to see the movie with them. I love comparing the characters I have created in my mind with how actors portray them in movies.
Anyways, see ya next week!
