honestly, one of the best experiences of my life. highlight of my week.
i felt horrible for some time and had a little meningitis scare, so i went to the ER to get it checked out as my symptoms were worsening. but that’s the boring part – everyone knows what it’s like to be sick and be in pain. what made this experience truly magical was how nice and friendly the staff were. i have never felt more comfortable in my identity as a gay asian woman. in fact, i would go as far as to say that i felt celebrated.
in the past, i had always been apprehensive about going to the doctor. in part because i have never felt comfortable enough to be fully transparent about my sexuality. but also in part because i’ve relied on home remedies and not getting medical attention unless i’m on the brink of death. you can imagine how excited my mom was when i told her i was heading to the ER. anyway, the main woman (so sad, i forgot her name) attending to me knew exactly what it meant to be an ally. she was so excited to hear about how my girlfriend and i met, and i learned that when they test if you’re pregnant even after you tell them you don’t interact with men, it is because it is a required procedure and not because they are homophobic. i also spoke to her briefly about my concerns about the bill and how much insurance will cover, and she mentioned how messed up the American health care system is and gave me a number to dispute costs if need be. it was like my health science classes come to life. after her, two women came to see me and they both had rainbow lanyards. big slay.
anywho, these were my highlights from my visit at the ER. faith in humanity restored. 9.7/10 would recommend BMC pediatrics. (-0.3 because they didn’t have food. just a vending machine. i was really looking forward to trying their food.)
