Playa Bowls

Week of 7/11-7/15

My First Smoothie Bowl

Background

I am very strict about my eating because I went through a significant weight-loss journey several years ago. Therefore, I struggle with activities requiring flexibility, like eating with people or eating foods without knowing the nutrition. However, this week I took a risk and went to eat out with my best friend from home.

The Location

I have seen Many NEU students getting Poke or Smoothie bowls but have never gone to get them myself because of food anxiety. So this week, I invited my friend to Playa bowls on Huntington Avenue. The store had pretty blue walls with a blackboard full of delicious-sounding smoothie recipes. I chose the “Electric Mermaid,” which has a Pitaya base with pineapple, mangoes, granola, kiwi, honey, and coconut flakes. My friend decided on a similar bowl with berries and bananas instead of tropical fruits.

Eating Time

After getting the food, we walked to the Rose Garden to enjoy our bowls in the warm evening sun. The first spoonful was a shock because it was much tastier than I expected. The pitaya base was sweet and refreshing but also surprisingly filling. It made me so happy to enjoy a regular meal with a friend. I hadn’t experienced the feeling in years. However, as I finished the bowl, I noticed I was full. This made the guilt come trickling into my psyche like an annoying headache. To distract me, I made aethetic tik toks of my trip with her. Overall, it was a good day, and I feel more comfortable bending my food rules in social situations.
