Mel’s Spotify Corner: Ariana Grande’s “Positions”

High school Mel (especially sophomore year Mel) would’ve been crying about the release of an Ariana Grande album and staying up until midnight to wait for the drop. College Mel was excited to see the new release but definitely didn’t feel like sacrificing some sleep for Miss Grande. Now, the moment we’ve all been waiting for….here is my most candid album review of “Positions” by Ariana Grande (please don’t be offended <3).

THE BREAK-DOWN (in album order)

shut up: all I had to say about this was that I liked the instruments and beat. Besides that, nothing really drew me towards the song.

34 + 35: I like the beat. It’s definitely a song I could see myself blasting in the car and singing along to.

Motive (with Doja Cat): it’s okay….it’s kind of basic. Doja Cat didn’t really add anything to the song (we ain’t forget what she did…).

just like magic: ok so…..I like this. The vocals and the beat kind of hit.

off the table (with The Weeknd): I LOVE THE WEEKND. He never disappoints. The harmonizing between the two was SPOT ON.

six thirty: this is a cute song! It definitely reminds me of something that’d be on Sweetner for some reason.

safety net: I like the vibe of this one! Ty Dolla $ign does the bare minimum but I still manage to appreciate his presence in songs.

my hair: I like the trumpets in the background. It’s more on the jazzy side and I could imagine something like this being played in a speakeasy or something.

nasty: ok I didn’t mind this song…it just didn’t really impress me besides her vocals. It was pretty average compared to the rest of the album.

west side: this one hit differently and I don’t even know why. I LOVED IT.

love language: THE INSTRUMENTALS for this one…….YES. It’s a lot more upbeat than the rest of the songs on the album. Also, the LAST PART. WOW. Yes I DID get up and start dancing to this…

positions: a CLASSIC. YES to women in power (unless you’re ACB). This screams SCREW THE PATRIARCHY.

obvious: I like the snare and high hat of this song. Both of these components add so much to the song. Overall, it isn’t bad- it’s a mild bop.

pov: THIS SONG. THE BEST. Ariana’s voice sounds angelic in this; I LOVE IT. It’s amazing and the lyrics are adorable. I would definitely slow dance to this song.

So there you have it! There’s my song rankings for Ariana’s newest album- granted I only fully listened to it once. I bet as I listen to it even more, the rankings will continue to change. Try streaming it and making your own list!
