Lunar New Year and the Lantern Rite

Happy Lunar New Year! This past Friday marked the beginning of another year in the lunar calendar. It is a time of celebration as families gather to spend time with each other and as children graciously receive their red envelopes. In preparation for the new year, many families invite the traditional lion dance to perform rituals at their homes. The lions, along with the drums and cymbals, are said to chase off evil spirits that may lurk in one’s home. This along with many other traditions are done in an effort to invite and keep good luck within the household.

The Lantern Rite is a similar annual event, coinciding with the timing of the Lunar New Year. It’s a festival that commemorates the heroes of the past. The locals of Liyue make Xiao Lanterns, as well as a larger Mingxiao Lantern, which they release on the day of the Lantern Rite. One writes their wish on their Xiao Lantern and releases it into the night sky. They float up using the power of Plaustrite and light up the sky. The Xiao Lanterns are released with the hope that their light might guide the souls of Liyue’s heroes back home and be reunited with their people.

The Lantern Rite Festival is held in the period leading up to date of the Lantern Rite itself, which is the first full moon of year. The Xiao Market is the collective festival marketplace of vendors selling goods ranging from traditional festival foods to artifacts from different lands to special potions for your Kamera. The purpose of the market, other than being a grand festival for the Lantern Rite, is to fundraise for the construction of the Mingxiao Lantern. The Mingxiao Lantern is a humongous version of the Xiao Lantern, built through the collective effort of the people of Liyue, with this year’s being made in commemoration of the deceased adeptus Skybracer.

Happy Lantern Rite! May your rolls be blessed by Xiao before the banner is over!
