During our time in Northeastern we may encounter classes that are longer than an hour. Personally, my attention span begins to waver during the 45-minute mark and I begin to fidget in my seat. I find it hard to focus on the lecture and I start to play around with my surroundings. I play around with my fingers, shake my leg, or twirl my pen around.
When I told my friends about my inability to stay focused during class, my friend told me to look into fidget toys. According to the Flushing Hospital, fidget toys are, “self-regulation tools to help with focus, attention, calming, and active listening.” Some popular fidget toys include fidget cubes, slime, stress balls, and fidget spinners. Fidget toys are helpful because it helps expends our restless energy, allowing us to focus better. Researchers have also found that movement is essential for learning because the learner is required to use both sides of their brain.
So the next time you find it hard to pay attention during class, try a fidget spinner!
