Cecilia Chung

Cecilia Chung is known for being a social rights leader in the areas of HIV/AIDS awareness, transgender women, and LGBT equality. She, herself, is transgender and an immigrant from Hong Kong, but that didn’t stop her from being the first female Asian to be elected on the San Francisco Board of Directors. She held many other positions, working specifically in the social equality and justice departments.

In 2013, she was appointed to the position of Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS by the former president Barack Obama where she served for two terms. Two years later, she started Positively Trans, which connects transgender people of color with HIV. Cecilia is also dedicated to community service and has been for the past twenty years. She was a member of the San Francisco Transgender Discrimination Taskforce and was the president of the SF Pride Board. Her greatest contribution to the community she serves is the Trans March, founded in 2004. Trans March is now one of the biggest annual transgender events in the US, and the credit goes to Cecilia Chung.

All in all, Cecilia Chung crossed the boundaries of being an immigrant to work towards advancing equality and justice. Her efforts and impact on the transgender community can clearly be seen throughout history and beyond.
