Applying for Co-ops
By Altai Ozkan
Recently, I have been extremely stressed about applying for co-ops, and I am sure a lot of people are in the same boat. Waiting for a response from employers is the worst part, on top of writing cover letters for basically every position you apply to. Right now, I am trying to apply for clinical research or medical assistant positions, and basically every employer wants a cover letter, and for good reason. You can’t blame them for wanting to know your story and why you want to work there when it comes to helping people and working for their profession.
Then, there are other thoughts that may cross your mind (which are all hypothetical for me, since I didn’t get a response or interview yet). What if I accept their offer, and then a much better co-op comes up on the site later on? What if I should have chosen a different type of co-op since it meets the prerequisites for medical school more? What if I am not going to enjoy working there for half a year? All of these questions keep popping up in my head every time I go on the NUworks website, and hopefully, it won’t last much longer.
It gets even worse since I have so many other priorities as well, such as doing well in all of my classes to raise my GPA for medical school. I kind of messed up in some of my classes during my remote semesters, and even had to drop one, so my GPA is not looking the greatest at the moment, and especially not for med school. I also have another priority which I am actually working on more than ever before, and that is eating healthy and going to the gym everyday. That is also taking up a lot of my time and energy, since I am basically only making my own food and counting calories for basically everything. Applying to co-ops is just adding more weight on my shoulders, and I don’t know if it should be a huge priority or one I should just keep in the back of my mind.
This piece was kind of a rant, and hopefully, I am not the only one in this stressful situation at the moment.
