And Now I Hear a Symphony

If you know me, you know I absolutely love music.

I’ve grown up on music—my mom plays the traditional Vietnamese đàn tranh, and she went to music school and even taught music. My dad has played guitar since he was a kid, and even now my younger sister is taking violin lessons! I’ve had my fair share of piano lessons growing up (but don’t ask me to play now), and I also used to sing a lot for my local temple. In high school, I was part of 3 choirs, and it was one of my most favorite and most important extracurriculars I did.

Even though I don’t know that much, I love learning about music theory and analyzing movie soundtracks. I’ll never stop talking about how important background music is to different scenes.

One thing in particular I love in music is when artists incorporate classical or orchestral instruments and patterns into their songs. Here are some of my favorite examples of this!

(time stamp in parenthesis)

  • “Pluto Projector” by Rex Orange County (2:59)
  • “The Butterfly Effect” by Before You Exit (3:08)
  • “So Beautiful” by DPR Ian (00:00)
  • “Senseless” by Phe R.E.D.S feat. pH-1 (2:21)
  • “Lay All Your Love On Me” by ABBA (3:51)

If anyone has any similar songs to these, please recommend them to me! Or, if you just have a song you’d like to share, I’d love to hear 🙂

P.S., the title of this post is a reference to “I Hear a Symphony” by Cody Fry, who is also known for incorporating these patterns into his songs!
