After the Storm

November 7th, 2020….what a beautiful day! I was on the train heading back home when I heard the news from a group chat. We were continuously sending screenshots of whenever a state had turned red or blue or if the margins head widened or narrowed. It was when I got several text messages from a group chat of students of color from my high school that I actually found out. My friend Quincy literally texts, “ytkv 😈 😈 “ followed by other friends texting “YEEEEE” and “LETS GOOOOOO.” And that’s how I knew. I then went on Instagram and the first post I see is from Vox, announcing that Biden had been officially projected to win the 2020 presidential election. The amount of relief and joy I felt in that seat was indescribable. I was ready to jump out of the train and run to the South Attleboro station myself.

I obviously started crying a little bit on the train. And I documented it of course. The past week had been so draining and exhausting that all my emotions had bottled up until that exact moment. I didn’t want to embarrass myself so I shed a couple of tears and anxiously waited to get to my stop. Once I got to South Attleboro and saw Noah’s car and the precious flowers he had gotten me, I ran into his arms and immediately started sobbing. I was 1.) super happy to see him and 2.) crying tears of joy about Joe Biden. There was a lady parked next to us that rolled down her window and shouted “You two are gonna make me cry!” which helped to lessen my tears.

What I saw for the rest of the day made me extremely happy and hopeful for our country. I saw endless posts about the celebrations all over the country, even in our city of Boston. I spent the day in Rhode Island and wished I could’ve been celebrating in those streets too, but I was happy to be home and with the people I loved. We celebrated in our own way!

This terrifying race was over. My rights along with the rights of my friends and family were bound to be protected under this next presidency. Decency, loyalty and commitment to making this country a better place were finally back in the White House. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are obviously not saints and we most definitely won’t be treating them like so. But to finally have a president and team that cares about the people they serve is refreshing. Now it’s time to hold them accountable for their actions. The power is back in the hands of the people of the United States.
