A New Semester

Spring semester just began not over a week ago and I’m back in Boston for classes. Many changes have occurred since being here, both expected and unexpected. One, my roommate, who went back home to China for break, decided not to come back to Boston. When she broke the news to me, I was extremely disappointed and sad that we wouldn’t be able to do the things we had in mind for this new semester. I’m currently living alone in a double bedroom which has its pros and cons. Although it’s nice to have the space to myself (as a major introvert this is a blessing in disguise), it calls for having more self-motivation. Whereas last semester my roommate and I would wake up early and head to the gym or begin schoolwork, I now find it nearly impossible to open my eyes without dreading getting out of bed. I’m realizing that I was dependent in ways. Typically, starting a new day was exciting and getting out of bed was never something I thought twice about. An explanation for this is partially because the gyms are not opened. This was a huge change that I didn’t see coming when I returned to campus. Over break, I got into the groove of working out every morning with my sister and it had a monumental impact on my mental health. With the gyms being closed and an unwillingness to workout in my dorm prevailing, I have not participated in any kind of physical activity since being back in Boston. This has affected my mental space in ways I wish it didn’t; The lack of motivation, tiredness, and weakness I have been experiencing are mostly due to not being active and not having a method of destressing. Thankfully, the gyms are opening back up on February 1 which will truly be a game changer and I’m looking forward to getting back to that routine I made for myself last semester.

In other news, I’m taking my co-op class this semester which will prepare me for the co-op application process. My hope is to get a co-op for the fall but with COVID, there’s a lot of uncertainty as to if I will be able to work in person, or even get hired. Although, I’m taking it step by step and proceeding with a positive mindset. There’s a lot of room for improvement when it comes to my professionalism and that is an area I want to work on this semester with the guidance of my co-op advisor. Northeastern offers many opportunities for experiential learning and I’m hoping that I will be able to take advantage of this before I graduate and not be hindered by the virus.

Being back at the AAC was something I was extremely looking forward to this semester and I’m excited for the upcoming blog posts that are in the works!
