One of the greatest things about being at home is access to the kitchen, which I did not have during my semester at college. Recently, since I mostly stay at home during the weekdays and many of my friends are still out of town, I spend a lot of time in the kitchen. I have always been interested in cooking, but there was never really a need for it. Now that I have so much free time, and meals are not as easily accessible as walking to the dining hall, I have started to experiment and try out many recipes. I also have my sister at home, so she was able to taste test a lot of the things I made.
When I was little, the go to meal after Chinese school was a Japanese curry dish with chicken, carrots, onions and potatoes that my friend’s mom would make for us. I would sometimes watch her make it, and I tried it out recently. It was not as hard as I remember, the curry cubes that you buy in the store really saved a lot of time. The only thing that was hard was cutting up the onion into small pieces. I also had allergies, so I was sniffling from my allergies while my eyes were tearing up – not a good combination.
Recently, I was really craving ramen from this one ramen chain in Japan, Ichiran. I binge watched so many YouTube videos of people visiting this restaurant (which also helped to satisfy my dire want to start traveling again). My mom found out that this restaurant also sells an instant version of their ramen, so she bought a box home for me to try, and I cooked some up in the kitchen today. It was pretty good, but not as good as having someone cooking it for you.
I found out that I really enjoy cooking. The tasks are straightforward, and the end goal is occasionally delicious. Although cliché, I think the best part of cooking is getting to see other people enjoy what I make. Cooking really is a science, and I have developed a new respect for all the cooks out there.
