Two weeks into the Spring semester and I have to say I have never felt more like a college student. There’s a certain freedom that is refreshing about being on campus and I guess that comes with being an adult. The freedom to go out when you want, to spend your own money, and make your own choices, albeit not all are good (some are awesome).
It’s been rather cold here in Boston. A few days we got a little snow and are now expecting a winter storm over the weekend. This interaction with the weather allowed so many new experiences to occur in the last week. Tuesday night as I was getting ready for bed, my roommate runs in to tell me that it was snowing outside. As someone who grew up in sunny south Florida, I was very excited. This means at almost midnight I was pulling on my winter coat and snow boots to go play in the snow. And play in the snow I did.
Just outside the door was a winter wonderland and I was ready to let my childlike joy and wonder free. Having a snowball fight with strangers outside the dorm, making my first snow angel in Krentzman quad, and just walking around campus at night as it snows. By the end of this snowy night adventure, I couldn’t feel my face, and my fingers felt like ice. By noon the next day, most of the snow had melted, but the memories will stay frozen in my heart.
With the winter storm approaching, it was imperative in my mind to go on a “Target run”. Yet, with classes and work the best time to go ended up being at 7 in the morning when it opens. The 20-minute walk to Target in 15-degree weather is never fun but having a friend to go with you makes the time pass by faster. Target right after opening is empty besides its workers. Quickly I was able to pick up the few personal items I needed. The most daunting task, to select for my emergency dorm “snowstorm” food supply, still remained. It was a difficult choice, but in the end, microwave popcorn and Velveeta mac and cheese made the most sense.
Due to having woken up so early to go to Target, I was exhausted when we got back to the dorm around 8:30. This led to the first big decision for the day. To take a two-hour nap till my first class of the day at 10:30. After three back-to-back classes, I was free for about two hours till my last class. That meant a quick lunch and another nap. With my last class done the only logical choice was to take one last nap before dinner. This means I deliberately took three naps throughout my class schedule. Weirdly I don’t know if I should be proud or horrified. But that all comes with the freedom of being an adult.
