Me and My Roommates’ Snack Picks from an Asian Supermarket

Hey guys! As you may or may not know, I am a sophomore living in Willis Hall with three other people. My current roommates are Aly Uy, Fiona O’Brien, and Ursula Duncan; I lived with Aly last year but this is my first time living with Fiona and Ursula. Together, we have quite a fun time jopping, cooking and making fun of each other but in a friendly way. We also have an immense appetite that can only really be filled by the number of snacks we buy and consume on the daily.

My roommates and I tend to go grocery shopping once or twice a week (although we sometimes run to Wollaston’s when we run out of something we really like) and our favorite places to go are Asian supermarkets such as Hmart and Super 88. This is because these are some of the only stores that offer a wide variety of different Asian snacks and for a somewhat reasonable price. So look no further for a few snacks that we often get that help us embrace the Asian culture and show the value of imported goods.

Jelly Straws

As always, we might have gotten the inspiration to try these via a Tiktok video or trend. These gelatinous cylinders are the perfect source for a nice fruity flavor and are lowkey a choking hazard if you try to slurp it really quickly. We have definitely gone through an entire bucket of these within a few days, but mostly because they never really seem to fill you up.

Taiyaki Ice Cream

A known delicacy in Japan (although this specific brand is Korean), these fish-shaped cones with ice cream inside them is a beloved dessert in our dorm room. It’s filling is sweet and balances out the wafer shell. Since the boxes usually come in a pack of four, we each get one and eat them together.

Boba Ice Cream Bar

This Taiwan boba brand has certainly won the hearts of many boba fanatics, including us. Honestly, even though these boxes are priced at around $8, it’s really hard to find in Asian supermarkets because people buy in bulk and it gets sold out fairly quickly. When I do get the chance to buy it, we all enjoy chewing the boba and getting the sweet taste of the brown sugar ice cream.

Pocky

A classic favorite among Asian youths, Pocky is also prevalent in our household. Obviously Strawberry is our most common flavor, but lately, I’ve been trying to expand my tastes and try newer and rarer options. A personal favorite is the Almond Crush because it honestly tastes like a Ferrero Rocher on a stick.
