Early Life
Sandra Oh was born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario. Her parents immigrated from South Korea to Canada to continue their education. Oh first started performing at the age of 4, when her parents put her in ballet. She continued to perform in plays and small television and commercial roles. Oh eventually turned down a four-year journaling scholarship and went to the National Theatre School of Canada. She paid for her own tuition since her parents remained skeptical about pursuing acting. She later mentioned in an interview that she realized that she was the only person in her family without a Master’s degree.
Important Accomplishments
One of Oh’s first significant roles was playing the main character of The Diary of Evelyn Lau. She was picked due to her boldness at the age of 19 and won a Gemini and Cannes FIPA d’Or for Best Actress. She continued to have important roles such as Arli$$, Sideways, Grey’s Anatomy, and Killing Eve.
APIDA Community Involvement
Throughout her years, Oh has remained an important figure in the APIDA community.
After depicting the head of a college English department in the TV show “The Chair”, she discussed Asian stereotypes in Hollywood. To Oh, taking on a more stereotypical academic role allows her to add more layers to the character and stray from the typical one-dimensional Asian characters.
Most recently, Oh spoke at a Stop Asian Hate protest in Pittsburgh after the Atlanta spa shooting. She called upon others to be proud of their Asian identity and sent kind words to the victims’ families.
