A poet. An artist. A performer. Among other things. Rupi Kaur was born in Punjab, India and emigrated to Canada at a young age, together with her family. She started performing poetry in 2009 and eventually rose to fame on Instagram where she has a collection of poems. In 2014 self-published a debut collection called (2014) and then followed by The Sun and Flowers in 2017. From the desire to feel less pressure for commercial success inspired comes a third collection in 2020 called Home Body.

Her work is very simplistic in nature and explores South Asian Identity, immigration and femininity with her childhood and personal life serving as sources of inspiration (also, the line drawings <3). Her success has definitely “democratized poetry and literature in general” as she mentioned. It caused an “overall shift [in reading habits]…in the past decade”. She has also inspired young poets to begin writing and have become a voice for the marginalized.
