If I had all the resources in the world and could plan an event at the AAC, here’s what I’d do: I’d bring in Asian American figures who’ve dealt with the same stuff we all have – being Asian in a society where we’re not the majority. Think actors, comedians, people who’ve made a mark in American culture. They’d share their stories, talk about the ups and downs, and how it’s shaped who they are today.
Folks like Constance Wu, Hasan Minhaj, etc — they’ve got stories that hit close to home for a lot of us. And since I’m a huge foodie, I’d definitely want them to dish about the food they grew up with. I would imagine a type of vibe where they’re chatting about their favorite childhood dishes, and we’re all munching on the same stuff they grew up eating. Yum I love food.
It would be a laid-back vibe, with good food, good company, and some talk about what it means to be Asian American.
