Elliot’s Song

SPOILER ALERT FOR EUPHORIA

Unless you live under a rock, you probably have heard of HBO’s Original, “Euphoria”. The show, starring Zendaya, is taking the internet by storm. Chances are, you have come across a joke about the unrealistic high school experience depicted by the show. Or you have read a critique complaining about the extensive drug use in the show. In my case, I was introduced to the show after I was completely lost in a discussion my friends had about Euphoria’s latest episode together. I promptly watched a couple of episodes to feel included. I was hooked after watching a few episodes. It is one of those shows that are just so bizarre and suspenseful, you have to watch it.

In the last episode, the season ends with a five-minute scene of Elliot singing his song, “Little Star” or “Elliot’s Song”. Many viewers were upset by this scene taking up a big part of the season finale. However, I think this scene was beautiful. Their relationship was built from their childhood trauma and dependence on drugs. They later became each other’s enablers for their addictions. However, since Rue has gone clean, Elliot was unable to follow. Hence, the personal song that Elliot writes to Rue signals that although he still wants to be friends, he knows it would end up hurting her. Despite that it would leave him lonely, he would rather do what’s best for Rue.
