Blog #3 – Hobbies

The ‘what are your hobbies?’ question is always a hard one for me; I’m someone who loves exploring different interests and never really sticks to one (or I haven’t really found a hobby I’m willing to stick to). I think I explored the most when I was stuck at home during covid times – I got into calligraphy, flower sketching/coloring, video editing, and baking. One hobby I’ve been on and off with since COVID is reading/watching dystopia. I first got into dystopia when I picked up the Hunger Games during my sophomore year in high school. I remember I was taking classes at home due to COVID, so I read the entire series + watched all the movies in 4 days. After that, I ventured through different dystopian novels (Scythe, Fahrenheit 451, The Handmaid’s Tale, etc. – the classics!), but haven’t really been back at it the past year due to being caught up in stuff. I also love dystopian shows, such as Black Mirror on Netflix. As someone who didn’t really grow up as a book person, dystopian connected me to my love for reading. What I love about dystopia is that it gives us a world based off of entirely different beliefs, perspectives, norms, and ideas that we wouldn’t easily find in our own world. Furthermore, it allows me to slip into a different universe even if it’s just for a couple of hours. But I feel as if the most compelling thing about dystopia is that it’s realistic to a certain extent.
