AAC Fellows: Honoring Legacy and Leading Forward
The AAC Fellows was officially established in 2015 and originally named Team 442. This name was given to a cohort of student leaders who oversee the Asian American Center’s (AAC) signature programs each year:
- Asian American Students in Action (AASIA): 2 Co-Chairs per year
- NU Growth and Opportunities for Asian American Leaders (NUGOAL): 2 Co-Chairs per year
- Pan Asian American Council: 2 Co-Chairs per year
- Asian American Heritage Month (AAHM): 2 Co-Chairs per year
The name Team 442 was inspired by the 442nd Infantry Regiment, a highly decorated unit of the U.S. Army composed almost entirely of second-generation Japanese American soldiers who served during World War II. Known for its bravery and resilience, the regiment’s motto was “Go For Broke”—a Hawaiian slang term meaning to risk everything in pursuit of a goal. This spirit of courage and commitment embodies the values we hope to instill in our student leaders.
By naming our leadership cohort after the 442nd, we honor the many ways Asian Americans have contributed to the United States even in the face of xenophobia and racism. We aim for our students to embrace and carry forward this legacy with pride, understanding, and determination.
In April 2025, the AAC staff and the final Team 442 cohort transitioned the name to AAC Fellows, continuing the legacy under a title that reflects both the evolution and ongoing impact of the program. The AAC Fellows build on the foundation laid by previous co-chairs and help shape the future of the Asian American Center at Northeastern University. Their work supports the community, uplifts their peers, and strengthens the presence and voice of Asian American students on campus.
