Hello and welcome back to my blog! Today’s is going to be able some of the shows that I binge-watched over the Summer as an attempt to escape boredom and feeling dead inside. This is in no particular order. I thought it might be interesting to see if other people had different opinions on these shows since they were all on Netflix’s top ten when they first came out. Warning: Spoilers below.
Avatar the Last Airbender- (10/10)
Recently and finally released on Netflix this year. The best show ever. Honestly. I would give it a million out of ten if I could. I grew up watching this series, but over time I forgot about it. This summer was when I finally had the chance to rewatch it all the way through and I was surprised by how much I remembered. The storyline, characters, and music will melt your heart and stay with you forever. Zuko’s redemption arc is probably one of the best I have ever seen on television and the adult themes that play out such as talks of genocide and war are perfectly dealt with in a child setting. I’ve even ordered an Avatar-themed tapestry for my dorm to show my appreciation and dedication to the series.
The Umbrella Academy- (9/10)
The second season came out and it was quite an improvement from the first. I definitely liked Vanya’s story in this season much better than in the last, and the lack of incest in this season was definitely a plus. (I did not enjoy Luther and Allison at all sorry). There’s a lot of chaos caused by the second season being set in the 1960s in Dallas. The twist with Lila actually being special like the rest of them was shocking. The cliffhanger at the end with Ben coming back at the end of the season is definitely a motivating factor to continue watching the series.
Love is Blind- (5/10)
While it was good for entertaining purposes, it felt very messy and kind of overwhelming. The plot is based on marrying someone without seeing them first and from having only a few days of talking. A few couples were picked for filming: they had to broadcast meeting the parents, living together, and the altercations between them. In the end, only two couples made it out, and mostly wasted money and feelings remained. Also, it was like the show wanted you to hate Jessica, with the way they antagonizing her by panning over to her when Barnett picked his now-wife over her.
Never Have I Ever- (8/10)
A cast full of POC made me very interested to see how it would turn out. This story depicting the life of Devi as she struggles through her coming of age in high school is super relatable. It was both fun and heartwarming as it mixed Devi’s path and fight to being popular with the trauma of her father passing. While funny most of the time, there were moments where I couldn’t help at cringe at her actions and her lack of sensitivity, which I think was done on purpose to show how she was, in the end, just a teenager.
Indian Matchmaking- (7/10)
This reality show presented an entirely different culture than what most Americans are used to. It brought to light the very real challenges of finding love in the modern world and the lengths at which people are willing to go to achieve them. Some of the stories they showed were successful while others left you kind of unsatisfied because they didn’t really follow through. The way the matchmaker consulted astrology experts and paired up people based on birth charts was super intriguing.
