SUMMARY:Rethinking Korea: Yoon Sun Yang
DESCRIPTION:The Korean peninsula exerts an outsized influence on almost every facet of the world today. South Korea has emerged as one of the largest economies in the world\, whose exports include everything from advanced technologies to popular culture. North Korea remains an authoritarian regime\, whose efforts to challenge its international isolation threatens to ignite a global conflict. The peninsula is thus a critical engine of the global economy and a volatile flashpoint of geopolitical tensions. It is too important to be overlooked\, let alone ignored. \nThis series\, Rethinking Korea: New Perspectives on a Critical Region\, invites distinguished scholars of culture\, transnational history\, environment\, and international relations to offer novel perspectives on Korea while situating its complex place within global developments. We invite speakers to share their work that will not only shed light on the internal dynamics and rich history of Korea but also explore the complex relationship between this critical region and the larger world. \nThe first lecture in the series will feature Dr. Yoon Sun Yang. Dr. Yang is Associate Professor of Korean & Comparative Literature and of Women’s\, Gender & Sexuality Studies at Boston University. Her book From Domestic Women to Sensitive Young Men: Translating the Individual in Early Colonial Korea (Cambridge: Harvard University Press\, Asia Center\, 2017) won the James B. Palais Book Prize of the Association for Asian Studies in 2020. She is the editor of the Routledge Handbook of Modern Korean Literature (2020). Her second book project tentatively titled “Transpacific Palimpsests: Early Twentieth-Century Korean Migrant Literature between Two Empires” has been supported by a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Fellowship and a Suzy Newhouse Center for the Humanities Fellowship. \nDr. Yang’s talk will be titled\, “Minor Cosmopolitanism: Korean-Language Transpacific Genre Fiction During the Interwar Period.” \nThe speakers series is made possible by the South Korea Initiative Fund\, which is dedicated to helping establish an institutional commitment to Korean Studies at Northeastern\, offering financial support to students studying or working in Korea\, and educating the community about important issues regarding Korea in the world.

SUMMARY:Silent Movie Day!: Oath of the Sword (1914)
DESCRIPTION:Northeastern University and Boston Asian American Film Festival celebrate National Silent Movie Day and the upcoming 15th Boston Asian American Film Festival with a festival preview\, screening of Oath of the Sword (1914) and panel conversation. \nThe Oath of the Sword was produced in 1914 by a company described by Moving Picture World as the “first company in America to be owned\, controlled and operated by Japanese.” Based in Los Angeles\, the Japanese American Film Company was among several similar independent film companies established by Japanese during a period when the American film industry had yet to become Hollywood as we know it. The Oath of the Sword is the earliest known Asian American film production and illuminates a largely unknown chapter in American film history. \nJoin us for the East Coast premiere of this recently REDISCOVERED & RESTORED silent film treasure. Musical score arranged from period photoplay music\, with additional original material\, by Allen Feinstein. Orchestration for theatre orchestra by Allen Feinstein\, Ben Green\, and Jasmine Bryant. \nPanel discussion with Denise Khor\, Arthur Dong\, and Allen Feinstein\, moderated by Susan Chinsen. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \n  \nFilm still courtesy George Eastman Museum. Restored by the Japanese American National Museum and George Eastman Museum. Funded by the National Film Preservation Foundation. The digital restoration from a 35mm nitrate print and 35mm safety negative from the George Eastman Museum collection was completed at Eastman Museum Film Preservation Services and Colorlab. \nDIRECTED BY: Frank Shaw.
