Should I get a pet cat during college?

Something that’s been coming up way too often in my household of 4 roommates, is everyone’s desire for a cat. Conceptually, having a pet cat sounds so fun. It’s no secret how much happiness a pet can bring to the household, but we find ourselves never pulling the trigger for financial and ethical reasons. Financially, caring for a pet can be expensive. Buying food, insurance, treatment, etc, is all very expensive. Ethically, I can’t imagine we as college students would take the best care of this cat. Our priorities could easily shift to other things, and neglect amongst college pets is common. Not to mention, when we inevitably part ways after graduating, we’d have to figure out what to do with the cat. Would you get a pet in college?
