Self-care for Election Season

At the time I am writing this, tomorrow is election day. As absentee ballots get counted and we painstakingly discover who the next president is, I thought I would remind everyone to indulge in self-care! Emotions will be brewing and swirling. You might feel stressed and overwhelmed. Here are 10 small ways that I like to practice self-care in my daily life:

  1. Journal! There are few things more freeing than transferring all your thoughts on to a page.
  2. Eat something sweet! I have a big sweet tooth so any dessert can make me feel better.
  3. Have a dance party in your bathroom! Brushing my teeth in the morning is a prime dance party opportunity.
  4. Treat yourself some boba! I genuinely have trouble distinguishing between different boba places so I am thankful for all of the establishments around campus.
  5. Sing along to your favorite songs! At least once a week, my roommates play some music that we all sing too. It’s probably my most effective stress reliever.
  6. Make plans with friends! If you haven’t initiated plans with friends, here’s your reminder to do so.
  7. Put your phone down! We spend enough time staring at screens.
  8. Read something! Be transported to a world different than the one we’re living in. I’ve been enjoying reading in bed as my first activity of the day.
  9. Order food! My roommate and I always get excited over spontaneously ordering food. It’s often our reward after a long week.
  10. Sleep! Sometimes you need to have an early night or a late morning. Let your body reenergize with a good night’s sleep.
