Review of Olivia Rodrigo’s SOUR Album

It has been over a week since Oliva Rodrigo’s debut album has graced the world. But who is Olivia Rodrigo you ask? She is a Filipino-American, 18 years old singer from California and in line to be the next “Taylor Swift” of our times. She started out as an actress at a young age and went on to star in hit shows like Bizaardvark and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. Nowadays, it seems like her singing career has become her big break into society, and rightfully so! Olivia Rodrigo’s SOUR is a force to be reckoned with and I implore you all to give it a listen if you haven’t had the chance!

Soundtrack Ordered in My Personal Ranking of Her Songs!

  1. brutal
  2. good 4 u
  3. déjà vu
  4. happier
  5. jealousy, jealousy
  6. favorite crime
  7. traitor
  8. enough for you
  9. hope ur ok
  10. drivers license
  11. 1 step forward, 3 steps back

My most favorite song of the entire album is “brutal” because one’s ability to yell out the lyrics of this song in such a carefree and cathartic way. On my first listen, I was really surprised at the stark difference between this song and her initial release of “drivers license” but it quickly grew on me. I’ll also admit that at first it was quite difficult to differentiate between all of the other songs because they were similar in sound and meaning. However, now I can appreciate the beautiful nuances of each song and feel a yearning to get a boyfriend and break up with him.

My other favorites include “good 4 u”, “deja vu”, and “happier”. First of all, the “good 4 u” music video was such a cinematic experience, I thoroughly enjoyed it! The lyrics are also very “screamable” if you’re in need of a singing-venting session in your next car ride. Moreover, I also liked the “deja vu” music video— I really loved the parallels between her and the ~new girlfriend~ and the artistry in it as well. I enjoyed the more ethereal and calming choruses compared to “brutal” and “good 4 u”. Lastly, when I first listened to the song “happier”, I couldn’t help but think of how clever the lyrics sounded and truly expressed how I would feel if my ex had a new girlfriend.

Thanks for reading! See ya next week!
